I often hear the question, "What's the best sea salt?" or "Which SALTOPIA salt should I use for this recipe?" The answer is typically the same again and again. My response is, "Whichever one you'd like as long as you enjoy the flavor combinations!"
Is there really a best sea salt option?
Yes, there’s always a selection that may be better than any other, of course! However, it’s really based on a personal preference. For example, I absolutely LOVE garlic! Anything with garlic in it has my name on it. I even attend annual garlic festivals to enjoy all sorts of garlic creations. I’ve tried chocolate covered, roasted garlic cloves on lollipop sticks! It was interesting to say the least! However, garlic aside, it’s always a good idea to understand how flavor combinations will interact within recipes. Let’s say you are working on a recipe that super savory and rich, pairing it with a sweeter or acidic infused sea salt cuts back some of the richness, giving it a more complex flavor overall. The contrast in flavor creates a balance that is truly enjoyable. It’s what Chefs learn in culinary school as a core value.
